The kid turned 5 today. She’s still at school right now, but I got to drop off cupcakes for the class. Mmmmm…, cupcakes.

The Godfather…, Muppet Style
Filed Under Daddy Posts | Leave a Comment
My kids were playing around in my bed the other day with their stuffed toy horse. They left the room, and what I saw reminded me of the famous scene from “The Godfather,” only without all the blood and screaming. It struck me as funny – so here it is…

Overheard on the Swingset
Filed Under Daddy Posts | Leave a Comment
A couple of neighborhood boys came over to play with Quinn after school the other day. They were all hanging out on the swingset and I was just sitting on the deck keeping a watchful eye on them. The 5-year-old – who’s also in kindergarden at the same school – said, “You’re lucky! You dad’s home all day with you.” That boy gets a few extra pieces of candy when he rings my doorbell this Halloween.

OUCH!!!
Filed Under Daddy Posts | 1 Comment
My older daughter is a thumb-sucker. Has been for years, and was still sucking it as of four days ago. We’ve been trying to get her to stop, but nothing’s worked. She almost had it kicked at one point, but when she started preschool two years ago, one of her classmates sucked his thumb and she started up again. Her front teeth stick out way in front of her bottom teeth, and her dentist has already told us that braces are inevitable. I jokingly threaten to cut it off; I even grab her by the wrist and pretend to chop it off with a karate chop. Little did I know how close to the truth that would become!
About a week ago, she was complaining about a hang nail, which I cut off for her. A day or two later, she was telling us how her thumb was bothering her. We just figured it was another case of her finger drying up and cracking from sucking it so much. Well, three days ago at school, she got sent to the nurse, who told us to take her to her doctor. When I saw her thumb later that day, I couldn’t believe it. It was huge and red – looked like a cartoon thumb that had been hit with a hammer. It was disgusting. It’s been waking her up at night it hurts so much. The pediatrician prescribed an antibiotic, but after three days on it, the thumb only looked worse.
My wife took her back to the doctor this evening, and I just got the phone call from my daughter – crying hysterically – that “the doctor had to cut my thumb!!!” My wife gets on the phone and tells me that the doctor had to make an incision in her thumb with a scalpel to allow it to drain. NASTY! She did’t even use novicane…, just cut it like Mick did to Sylvester Stalone’s eye in Rocky. I guess she’s doing a little better now. She’s calmed down and my wife’s taking them out for ice cream.
Maybe there will be a bright side to all this…, maybe she’ll stop sucking her thumb now?

Lovin’ Life
Filed Under Daddy Posts | 2 Comments
My youngest daughter is lovin’ life now that it’s just her and daddy for most of the day. With her older sister away at school, Grace and I have started connecting on a whole new level. Despite the tough life that she’s had, she’s become a very happy kid. She’s pretty hysterical too – she’s got a wicked sence of humor. She deserves all the extra attention and love she’s getting from me; I wasn’t very nice to her for her first year or so. I blamed her for most of the problems the family was having while we were adjusting to life with a special needs child. The way I see it, I have a lot of making up to do.
Check her out on the swing today. We’ve been playing this game where I stand in front of her while she’s swinging, telling her, “You better not crash into me!” Of course, I let her hit me and I do my best NBA fall onto the ground, complete with sound effects. She laughs hysterically every time.

No Kids: Day 3
Filed Under Daddy Posts | Leave a Comment
Well I was going to post a video of me reinacting the scene from Risky Business where Tom Cruise dances around in his underwear to “Old Time Rock & Roll,” (because that’s what I did today while my kids were at school) but I was too worried it might end up on YouTube. Instead, you’ll have to settle for the original.

No Kids: Day 2

Well…, I sort of needed a kid around for this one. Who else was going to give me a pedicure? She’s old enough to go to school – she’s old enough to start working around the house.

First day alone in 5 years. Passed out on the couch drinking Sam Light and eating Double-Stuff Oreos. Can’t wait to see how I spend my new-found free time tomorrow!

KINDERGARTEN!!!
Filed Under Daddy Posts | 1 Comment
My girl starts kindergarten tomorrow. Hard to believe, but it’s true. She’s also starting to look old to me…, well beyond her nearly 5 years. I feel like I’m on the verge of a whole new chapter in our lives. I also feel like I’m gonna miss the kid. We’ve been together every day since she was born; now I’ll only see her on weekends. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I don’t like the thought of losing control of her.
My youngest also starts school tomorrow. She’ll be going to preschool for 2.5 hours a day, 4 days a week. Factor in drop-off and pick-up travel time, and I figure I’m going to have 2 hours to myself again. What ever will I do with myself? Stay tuned…
