Every year since we bought our home, I’ve planted a small vegetable garden. At first it did great, but as the years went on and the trees at the back of our yard grew taller and taller, the garden did worse and worse because it was now in total shade from the trees. So this year, based on a friend’s recommendation, we decided to try planting our veggies in EarthBoxes. These are small, plastic containers with their own watering system that are supposed to get amazing results. We planted a couple of tomato plants in one box, and some peppers and squash in the other. Well, the squash plants grew so big that they fell over the side of the box and the stems split and rotted, but not before we harvested 2 yellow squash. The peppers are doing great, and the tomato plants are taller than I am. Lots of little green tomatoes…, still waiting for them to ripen. Have a look for yourself.

We’re pretty consistent about our kids’ bedtime. Always between 7:30 and 8pm. It’s a little tougher in the summer – it’s still light outside when we put them down and there’s no school early the next morning – but they’re usually so tired from playing all day that they’re ready anyway. Lately, however, we’ve noticed that they’re staying awake longer and longer in their room. Sometime we’ll still hear them talking an hour after we’ve officially put them to bed.

Does this mean that we’re putting them to bed too early? I don’t think so. They’re pretty wiped out when we bring them upstairs. Why are they fighting it, then? When do you start putting your kids to bed later?

The neighbor’s children stay up much later than ours. They always have. They have three boys, and my daughters can sometime still hear them playing outside when they’re tucked in bed. Those boys have a lot of energy, though, and their mom and dad may be trying to run them down until they drop. Who knows?

I don’t remember how old I was, but I DO remember trying to convince my father to let me stay up later. I would even pretend to take a nap on the couch, then “wake up” and tell him that I guess I could stay up later now that I had taken a nap. Funny…, now that I’m a dad, I know for a fact that I never had him fooled.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if I just let them stay up as late as they wanted. Eventually, they would crash, right? Maybe they would even realize how tired they were at some point and voluntarily head off to bed? Yea right…, who am I kidding?

Thank goodness for RaRa’s pool (RaRa is what my children call my mother-in-law). These two could spend all day in the pool. Like I said, Quinn is becomming quite the little swimmer. She’s taken huge strides this summer – she’s now jumping into the pool (although I can’t get her to stop holding her nose yet) and she’s swimming underwater! Just a month ago, she was still afraid to put her face in the water. Grace…, well she’s just fearless. She wears enough flotation devices to keep an elephant above water and just “jumps in” from one of the steps. I’m glad they’re both not afraid of the water and are becomming good swimmers. I – shall we say – was a late bloomer when it came to the pool.

These pictures are just so cute. My wife took them. Quinn’s becomming quite the swimmer…, here she looks like Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Grace running away from the tiny waves just makes me laugh.

Now that the Indiana Jones hype has died down, back to blogging about the family.

Happy Birthday Grace!!!

Hard to believe she’s 4 years old. We still got some work ahead of us for this one, but she’s come a long way, I tell ya. Her party is Saturday, but today’s her actual birthday, so she got a few presents this morning. She’s been playing for days in the sandbox I built for her, and she was vey excited to get her Groovey Girl horse.

Happy 4th of July. To wrap up my coverage of the Indiana Jones filming in New Haven (they’re off to other locations in CT, but I won’t be able to get to them), I present you with this video clip. I wish I could say I shot it, but I didn’t. I was, however, able to smuggle it out of the TV station. This is the clip that members of the production tried to confiscate after a photog at WTNH shot it. I’m pretty sure this is Harrison Ford and not his stunt double. Not bad for a 65-year-old guy, huh?! ILM will obviously have some wire removal work to do, but still…, impressive.

Here’s what I’ve been able to glean about the chase scene from Indiana Jones 4 from trips to the location shoot, coverage in the local news, and interviews with people involved with the movie…

The scene is one of the opening scenes in the film. Indiana Jones – a college professor – jumps onto the back of a motorcycle (not sure why, and I’m assuming – based on the looks of the stunt doubles – it’s being driven by Shia LeBeouf) and they take off down the street. I’m not sure who’s pursuing them, but the motorcycle chase takes them down several city street, then across the quad at the college campus. Several students and college professors have to dive out of the way as the motorcycle races through the middle of campus. Then the motorcycle drives up the stairs of the library and the chase continues inside. At some point someone crashes through the gates on campus – I know this because one of the large iron gates to the dorms at Yale had been raplaced with a styrofoam replica.

That’s what I know, folks. Shooting wrapped this morning and crews have already started breaking down. By Friday, downtown New Haven will once again look like 2007 instead of 1958. I can’t wait for the film to be released in 2008 to see the final results.

I have one more little treat for you that I will post tomorrow.
