Halloween Candy
Filed Under Daddy Posts | 1 Comment
As I’m sitting here stuffing my face full of more candy than I’ve probably had in the last 11 months combined, I stumbled onto this article about creepy, crazy halloween candy. Some of them I guess I understand – the kids would think they’re gross and cool – but do we really need fake boogers that look and feel real or bandages with edible candy scabs? That’s just nasty. Or maybe I’m just old.

Ridin’ Off Into the Sunset

We bought Quinn a 2-wheel bicycle for her 6th birthday, but haven’t had much of a chance to teach her to ride it. Our driveway is short and narrow, and I’ve done my best to hold on to her and run up and down the driveway a few times, but what she really needed was a wide open, flat space to see what she could do. Convinced it was our last weekend of really nice weather, I said, “Hey…, why don’t we throw the bike in the back of the car and drive up to the school to see if you can really ride this thing?” She kind of looked at me with eyes wide open as if to say, “Are you kidding?” It was a look of both hesitation and excitement all at the same time. Minutes later we were in the car headed up to the school.
She’s still too small for the bike, so I have to hold it steady while she climbs onto it. She started pedaling and I started running along side of her and it was only a minute or so before I had totally let go to the point where she could see my hands and know that I wasn’t holding on anymore.
“I’m doing it, Daddy!,” she said, “Am I really doing it?!”
“You’re doing it, sweatheart,” I said. And I stopped running to catch my breath and watched her ride around and around all by herself. Not that I needed it to remind me of this moment, but I shot a few seconds of it with the cell phone to share with the world.

Take a walk with me to the top of the Sleeping Giant State Park tower.

What better to do on a lovely fall day than take the girls on a hike. My wife and I teamed up with another dad from the neighborhood and his three daughters for a hike at Sleeping Giant State Park. Although there are lots of trails of varying degrees of difficulty, with 5 girls under the age of 6 and two jogging strollers, we needed to stick to the Tower Trail – a 1.6 mile hike to the top of the mountain. It’s called the Tower Trail for a reason – at the top is a cool, little tower – we told the girls it was a castle – that you can climb up inside to the top for a spectacular 360° view of the surrounding area. The girls all had a great time, and the adults got quite the workout!

JDRF Walk for the Cure
Filed Under Daddy Posts | 3 Comments
A few years ago I got involved with the local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It was a combination of factors that lead me to seek out a charity that I could do some work for – things going on with my daughter and things going on at work. My wife and I produced two videos for them as well as some print ads to advertise their annual Walk to Cure Diabetes. They’re a great organization to wonderful things for children and families whose lives have been affected by this horrible disease that currently has no cure.
Last year and again this year, we participated in the event not as producers, but as walkers. It’s a kid friendly event and it was a gorgeous day – we all had a great time. As a team, we raised over $1000 for diabetes research. I’m waiting to hear what the event raised in total, but their goal was $1,000,000.
