My wife and I met some friends in New York City for brunch yesterday. Grand Central Station was running a kaleidescope light show every half-hour. It was pretty cool – large images projected onto the walls and ceiling of Grand Central set to music. I had my camera with me; here are 30 seconds of the display. Enjoy, and have a very Happy New Year!

We create our own holiday card each year. They’re way more expensive than just buying a boxed card from a store, but totally worth it. Most of the time we use a photo of the girls that I take to go along with some creative idea my wife thought of. This year, since the four of us are now Nintendo Wii professionals, my wife came up with a great concept and I Photoshopped together the image using our actual Miis (if you’ve never played Wii before, your Mii is an on-screen representation of yourself that you use each time you play). I ordered them on December 11th and they shipped on the 12th. Due to some unfortunate mix-up between Kodak Gallery and DHL, the cards were lost. :-( Nobody got a Christmas card from us this year. I hate to see a good idea go to waste, so here it is…

…and a very Happy New Year!

So far, it’s shapin’ up to be a Christmas Eve to remember. The girls have been sent to their room twice already, and my wife just took them to see Rudolph at a local nursery with instructions from me to apologize for being bad listeners. I hope Santa finds it in their heart to forgive them.

Oh yea…, and these are funny.

I don’t know what made me think that changing my ring tone to the theme from Knight Rider was cool…, but I did…, and I did. And then it rang for the first time…, in public. Suddenly…, not so cool.

Honestly…, if they were all girls…, that number would probably be lower. ;-)

**UPDATE: The sneaky bastards at that site included a link to some dating site in their cut-and-paste code after I took the quiz. I have updated the link so that it takes you to the correct page. Sorry about that.

Grace had a sing-a-long at her preschool the other night, and guess who was there? Santa! I couldn’t attend, but apparently the girls were VERY excited. Quinn – who’s 6 now – was a little suspicious, however, because, “Santa’s beard kept moving.” She still believes in him 100% though…, and man how I wish it could stay that way.

I just finished watching a great 6-part series on Ovation TV called “The Genius of Photography.” Originally a BBC documentary, it took you through the history of photography, from its early beginnings right through today’s digital age. Each part focused on three or four photographers, including interviews with them and a detailed look at their work. I liked it so much because these are photographers who got into photography because it was something they loved. These were artists who took pictures for the sake of taking pictures, not because they were getting paid by a client for some commercial job. It really made me miss my cameras and finding time for myself to do this kind of thing.

I got into photography because I liked it and because I was good at it. Then, as I got older and bought equipment, rented a studio, bought a home, started a family, etc…, money became something I needed to hold onto all of those things and I started doing work for money’s sake – not for art’s sake. Pretty soon, you realize that you’re not doing the type of work you love at all.

Sure…, I still take snapshots of my kids – which I love doing – but I feel like I’ve gotten away from taking the types of photos I took when I first got interested in photography. I’m a creative person who isn’t creating for the sake of creation.

A year or so ago I told myself that I should set aside a couple of days every months to just go out and create something. Whether it’s a photograph, a painting (which is something I’ve never actually tried, by the way) or a short video about a subject I’m interested in. I just feel like I need to find that part of me again. This documentary may be just the thing to motivate me to do that.
