Because I don’t have enough to do, I thought I would finally act on an idea of mine that I’ve had for a while. Ever since I was introduced to blogging 4 years ago (wow…, has it been that long?!) I’ve always wanted to do a video blog. I just could never settle on what I wanted it to be about. I’ve posted videos on this blog before, and I hope to use more video in the months to come, but The [Only] Man of the House isn’t a true video blog. I wanted to do something like Rocketboom, GeekBrief or MobuzzTV – video blogs I watch religiously.

Well, I guess due in large part to where I work and what I do, I started the North Haven News – a bi-weekly video blog covering stories that have an affect on the lives of people living in my home town.

For such a small town, we seem to have an abundance of community newspapers. I think we receive 4 different town papers every week. Seems like a lot to me; there’s not too much to report on in our little corner of the world. So I decided to take a few select stories from those papers and package them in a short, 2-3 minute video as an experiment in hyper-local broadcasting. I’m only two episodes into this thing and haven’t gotten any real feedback from anyone in the town yet, which might be a good thing…, I’m not sure I could handle anything too critical. And if the comments ever become the type of thing you read on YouTube – forget it…, I’m shutting it down.

Take a look and let me know what you think. Just be kind to the host! ;-)

My company held its annual holiday party a few weeks ago. This year’s theme was “Homecoming.” We couldn’t work out a babysitter, so I took my daughter with me. Figured.., why not – I had already rsvp’d for 2. It was a special thing for her – she got to stay up past her bed time and go to a “grown up” party with daddy. My wife picked her up after the first hour, but not before we had our photo taken as Homecoming King and Queen.

They predicted 6″-10″ of snow. They canceled school the night before because of the forecast. And what did we get? Barely enough snow to cover the grass. A total waste of a snowday, but we managed to make a couple of grungy looking snowmen in the yard with dirty snowballs full of leaves. We didn’t care…, we had fun.

Apparently, my ISP goofed. Bad. I just read that due to a manual billing error, they overbilled almost all of their customers $7.5 million! Yes, you read that correctly…, $7.5 million. They immediately admitted to the mistake, but the way they handled it – although in line with a lot of the humor they use on their website and newsletters – was VERY unprofessional. TechCrunch has an article about the mistake, and you can read the apology yourselves on Dreamhost’s official blog.

Yikes! I wonder how many customers this is going to cost them?! I wonder if my website will be available much longer?

I always wanted daughters, and well…, I’ve been blessed with two. People sometimes ask me if I wish I had a son. Who needs boys when your girls are capable of this…
